Have you ever wondered what the different between Jack, Counterbalance, and Countermarche weaving looms? These 3 types of floor looms are named for the different ways in which each style creates a shed (the space created when a warp is lifted or lowered). We show the difference for each loom in this short video! |
This is a counter balance loom. It has these features depending upon the manufacturer:
On a counterbalance loom, the shafts are connected to each other via pulleys or jacks above the shafts. When you step on a treadle, one shaft is pulled down, and the connected shaft is therefore pulled up. So, for most counterbalance looms, the same number of shafts always goes up as goes down, and the combinations of shafts you can raise or lower depends on which shaft is connected to which. Counterbalance looms are limited as to shaft number (usually four) and possible sheds, hence pattern possibilities. See further information below: Handweaving Looms

This is a counter marche loom, a Glimakra loom. It has these features:
Made in Sweden of Swedish pine, the full-sized Glimakra Standard loom is extremely versatile and can be adapted and expanded as your interests in weaving grow and change. Like other countermarch and counterbalance looms, it allows a large shed even on a high-tensioned warp. The warp and cloth beams both have heavy metal ratchet brakes for weaving with high tension. Because the harnesses have open ends, heddles can be added at any time, even during threading. The overhead beater has a light touch and can be removed completely for threading. The beater has three positions so it can be moved toward the back of the loom as weaving progresses. This allows you to weave as much as possible before getting up to go to the back of the loom to advance the warp. The Standard Glimakra comes in four widths: 39, 47, 59, and 63". It works equally well for lightweight fabric and heavy rugs. The loom comes in a variety of types to suit any weaver:

A little video about how I set up the supplemental warp tester piece on my little 4 shaft Harrisville Designs loom. I'm testing setts for a more involved turned overshot piece I have in planning stages, but this one is coming out so nice that I may have to do this more often! I thought a video would be the easiest way to explain to those who were asking how this was accomplished :) (YouTube Video: 6 min 47 sec.)
